Mauritius Billfish Release International Fishing Tournament

Congratulations to Team Garmin Pulsator, winners of the 2019 Mauritius Billfish Release International Fishing Tournament. Team Garmin Pulsator is now qualified for the 2020 Costa Offshore World Championship in Costa Rica.

Team Garmin Pulsator won the 2019 Mauritius Billfish Release International Tournament, getting payback after their second place finish in 2018.

This year, the team took the lead on the first day of fishing with two marlins released — one by angler Shane Rolfe and one by captain Les Johnston. After day three, they were temporarily passed by Team Pura Vida who took the lead. On day four, the last day of fishing, Shane Rolfe released a blue marlin that allowed his team to win. Rolfe's catch also gave him the title of Best Angler of the tournament.

Fishing was very good throughout the tournament, taking place from February 2 to 6, 2019. A total of 13 blue marlin were released, with marlin estimated up to 550, 600 and 700 pounds. The average size of marlin released was exceptionally high. A total of 22 strikes and fights were also recorded.

The Mauritius Billfish Release International Tournament takes place in Mauritius, off the coasts of Black River, Le Morne and Tamarin during the peak of the marlin season. Situated on the west coast of the island, sheltered from the prevailing trade winds, these spots are the perfect place for unforgettable offshore fishing. The event, which is an Offshore World Championship qualifying tournament, is organized by Mauritian companies JPH Charters and Racing Republic.

OF NOTE: This tournament was the first in Mauritius to promote all marlin releases. The aim of the organizers is to further promote sustainable marlin fishing.
