The Offshore World Championship (OWC) is excited to announce Costa Sunglasses as 2019’s title sponsor of its premier event. Known for its unrivaled fishing lenses and frames, Costa has cemented itself as a leader in polarized sunglasses for fishermen worldwide. In February 2019, Costa released brand-new Broadbill and Spearo lenses for fishing enthusiasts to utilize on the water.

“The Offshore World Championship is a tournament that checks all the boxes for Costa,” says Andrew Cox, Costa’s Offshore Community Leader. “Not only is the OWC prestigious in its own right, but it’s an event that has eyeballs on it from all over the world. It truly means something for those who are privileged enough to qualify for the event, or even walk away as the winners.”

Besides designing, producing and selling sunglasses, Costa is at the forefront of ocean conservation. Because so many Costa sunglass owners enjoy the water regularly, Costa feels they have a responsibility to help protect it. Costa gives back in numerous ways, including, but not limited to, great-white-shark research, plastic-pollution reduction efforts and relief to coastal families affected by natural disasters. You can find out more about the company’s OCEARCH, Kick Plastic and #OneCoast campaigns at the website costadelmar.com.

Part of the reason Costa was attracted to the OWC, says Cox, is because of its all-release format. “This event is one that shows a lot of promise for the future when other tournaments are concerned with giant purses and the biggest fish on the docks,” he says. In addition to Costa’s growing partnerships with The Billfish Foundation, International Game Fish Association and other conservation groups, they are excited to expand their Kick Plastic program in 2019.

“We worked with Casa Vieja Lodge in Guatemala to highlight their recent shift to remove all plastic water bottles from their lodge as well as on their boats,” says Cox. “This is huge when you think about all the challenges they face in providing their clients with clean drinking water. They are estimating that it will eliminate about 80,000 water bottles a year, just from their lodge in Guatemala.”

Costa is working with other lodges around the world to help find solutions to remove single-use plastic water bottles from their lodges or charter boats, and the entire movement is something they rally behind as a company. For 2019, Costa Rica is in the company’s sights because of the country’s own goal to eliminate single-use plastic water bottles by as early as 2021.

“Fishing teams will see a major Costa presence at the 2019 event, and you better believe we will help put on a hell of a party,” says Cox. “But it’s not just about what we are doing at the event; we want to get involved with teams outside the event. Stay tuned as we work with the OWC staff to bring plenty of excitement to the OWC in 2019.”
