FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Results for the Sailfish Club of Florida’s 39th Annual Gold Cup Invitational
Palm Beach, FL - January 17, 2011 - The Sailfish Club of Florida hosted its 39th Annual Gold Cup Invitational Team fishing tournament January 11-15, 2011. The four day tournament, headed by Committee Chairman, Andres Fanjul, consisted of 20 teams of 65 anglers.
Taking home this year’s Gold Cup trophy was a local team from Palm Beach. Fishing aboard the boat Wrenegade with Captain Jimmy Garner, was Team Captain, Winston Wren, along with anglers Hunter Beall, Tony Cummings and Erik Waldin. Waldin (with nine releases) received the prestigious John Rybovich Memorial Award for the most sailfish releases on dead bait. The team also set a new Gold Cup record with 28 releases just barely beating the prior record by one fish. This is the third time Wren and his team has taken home the Gold Cup trophy.
Capturing second place was also another team from Palm Beach led by Boat Captain Dave Fields aboard the Mimi. Team Captain Clark Beaty and anglers Lach Cheatham, Gunner Akeson, and Ben Bakas released a total of 26 sailfish during the tournament.
Third place went to the boat Coral C led by Team Captain Chris Berian of Light House Point, Florida. Berian was joined by anglers Skip Smith, Rob Ruwitch and Boat Captain Ed Nicolace. The team had 20 releases, but beat out the Brielle Yacht Club team because of time of their last fish caught.
Fourth place also with a total of 20 releases went to the Brielle Yacht Club fishing aboard the boat Mehl Ticket. The team was led by Team Captain Robert Bocchino with Capt. Greg Leahy and anglers Kendall Cheatham, James Schwarz and Jim Foley.
Due to the cooler weather, 80% of the fish were caught within the first two days of the tournament. Out of the four days of fishing, the anglers released an impressive total of 303 fish.
The Gold Cup was founded in 1972 by John Rybovich to test the skills of anglers catching and releasing sailfish off the east coast of Florida. The Gold Cup is a perpetual trophy maintained by the Sailfish Club and is one of the most coveted prizes in competitive sport fishing.
The 40th Gold Cup Tournament will be held January 10th – 14th, 2011.
